They say that you can't teach a dog new tricks? Well after 44 years of continuous full time employment and 30 years with Wolseley UK, I have become self employed for the very first time.
I am writing this at the end of my first week so I thought that I would reflect on the experience so far. I have to say that the sensation has been distinctly strange and tinged with a little guilt. Guilt? Yes, not jumping out of bed at 6.30 and rushing out to the office has made me feel a tad uneasy, particularly since my wife is still on the treadmill.
The first days were fantastic as many of my colleagues and contacts over the years got in touch to wish me well. As a very active user of social media, I was almost overwhelmed with kindness from many of my online friends.
I have spent a lot of time in designing and setting up this website, in producing and sending mail shots, in putting together contact lists and social media campaigns. I have had 3 very exciting approaches which I am currently working through, so watch this space for more news in the near future.
There have also been some very practical tasks to complete. Having driven a company car for the last 35 years I have had to go out and buy a car, and tax and insure it too. Only time will tell whether I can generate enough interest to convince people to use my services but it won't be through lack of effort on my behalf.
